activity info

One of the best ways to enjoy the unique landscape of the Meteora rocks and to learn the history of the place which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. By joining this morning hike you will get the chance to see many things other visitors will never see, because we will guide you through ancient trails that only the locals know of. We are going to lead you to the footsteps of the first hermits and monks who originally arrived here more than 15 centuries ago, in order to experience Meteora like never before.

The hike begins from the foothills of Doupiani rock, beneath the old ruins of Pantokrator monastery. It then crosses through the immense rock formations to reach the northern side of Meteora. Over that side you'll discover the hidden monastery of Ypapanti and the ruins of St. Dimitrious. Listen to the stories and the legends behind each place you pass along the trail and the thousand years of history will become alive through the exciting narrative of our local mountain guides. You will get to enter the hidden monastery of Ypapanti, which opened its doors to hikers and will remain open until this October, away from the crowds. Afterwards, you will visit the monasteries of Great Meteoron or Varlaam and then you'll climb down the old footpath the monks used for centuries before the construction of roads for the last part of this marvelous hike.

The perfect tour for all who love outdoor activities, hiking and enjoying unique landscapes. The tour takes you to forests and small paths that you probably wouldn't do/find on your own. Our guide, Billy, was very relaxed and kept a nice walking pace. The only thing I missed in this trip was a bit more information on the area and history as we were walking. However, as the group was rather fit, the guide took us to the Dragon cave, which required a bit of climbing, but it was definitely the highlight of the tour, with some amazing views not everyone can get! When combined with the Meteora sunset tour, the whole Meteora experience turns to be just perfect!

We did the half day hiking tour with George, very informative and a good way to see a little bit of the other side of Meteora. We also did the sunset tour which we recommend.
If you plan to visit Meteora you must spend at least three or four days to fully appreciate what an amazing place it is.
We spent a wonderfully relaxing week there hiking to the monasteries.

The hiking tour of Meteora and the Great Meteoro monastery was absolutely brilliant. The walk was about 8km in length and it covered the various environments to be experienced in the area. The walk takes you "behind" the rocks away from Kastraki and allows glorious views over the upper Pinios R.Valley, through a very peaceful and beautiful young oak forest as well as views of other monasteries and ruins simply unavailable from the road. And going when we did also gave us the benefit of all the lovely autumn colours. There is a fair bit of up and down in the walk, and a couple of places are a little steep, but at 57 and 62 we are not exactly young yet we managed it quite easily. As others have stated, George is a wonderful guide. Spending about 5 hours in the company of someone who is so knowledgeable and passionate about the history, physical beauty and the spiritual aspects of the area is really wonderful. And having a guide is pretty indispensable because many of the trails are not marked and so it would be easy to get lost if you did it unaided. So if you have the time available, I would heartily recommend this way of seeing the area as you gain an experience unavailable by other means.

This is a very good way to visit Meteora. The hicking is not very difficult and our guide was kind and professional enough to make sure his pace could be sustained by all the group members. He was a local guy, very knowledgeable and experienced and we felt very safe with him. I am so very sorry we don't remember his name but we truly appreciated him.
