activity info

Join our guided half day tour to Cape Sounion and experience a breathtaking sunset at the unique temple of Poseidon, the God of the Seas in ancient times.

Our tour starts with a wonderful drive along the Athens Rivera. During this relaxing ride with your luxury air conditioned bus you’ll enjoy splendid views of the Saronic Gulf while passing through some of Athens’ most beautiful suburbs, including Hellinikon Olympic complex, Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, and Varkiza.

Arriving at the Cape Sounion, you will visit the 5th century B.C. Temple of Poseidon with its magnificent panoramic view of the Aegean Sea (on a clear day you can see at least seven islands). One of its columns has a graffiti left by none other than lord Byron in the early 1800s. Cape Sounion has long played an important part in Greek mythology and history, and the first recorded mention of it occurs in the Odyssey, as the last safe landing before Poseidon scattered the returning Greek navy. As god of the sea, Poseidon was very important for ancient Greeks, and the scale of the Temple at Cape Sounion reflects that.

After visiting the Temple, filled from the beauty, the history and the culture of this site we will wait to admire one of the most amazing sunsets you could ever imagine. And when the sun begins to slowly touch the sea it is the perfect moment for a glass of wine, before returning back to your hotel.

I can't say enough about this tour, it was absolutely awesome. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. We had a superb setting with a sunset on one side and a full moon rising on the other. Ended the tour with excellent wine. Strongly recommend this tour for all ages. Note: I would recommend comfort shoes and bug spray.

“Sehr schöne Tour” Die Fahrt dauert etwa 1,5 bis 2 Stunden (je nach Athener Verkehrslage). Ist aber nicht schlimm, weil die Fahrt an der Steilküste entlang sehr schön ist. Der Tempel ist sehenswert und es gibt natürlich einen wunderschönen Sonnenuntergang. Abgerundet wird der Abend mit einem Glas Wein. Insgesamt ein empfehlenswerter Abendausflug.

“very comprehensive and impressing” unfortunately lots of traffic, but this seems to be a major problem in Athens.

Heaven on Earth It was a short stay on site, but worth every penny. The view is amazing. So is the road which takes you there while it follows the coast for most of the way. Anastasia, our guide, was very enthusiastic and thoughtful. A vry nice get-away from noisy Athens

We had the good fortune of taking the Cape Sounio Sunset Tour! From the moment the tour bus left Athens, we began learning about the history of Athens and Greece from our friendly and very qualified professional tour guide, Irene. There was always something interesting that she was able to tell us about the areas we drove through, for the entire 1 hour trip to Cape Sounio. This, along with the dramatic coastline that we travelled along was already worth the cost of our ticket. Then we arrived at our destination, a large outcrop of rock overlooking a tranquil bay with fishing boats, and perched majestically above it all was the Temple of Poseidon. What a magnificent site! Upon arrival we disembarked and began a short walk up the hill, accompanied by our guide, who continued to bring historical perspective to what we were seeing. Upon reaching the temple ruins, she pointed out some relatively recent graffiti left by Lord Byron himself! We then had the opportunity to walk about the site, taking photographs and waiting as the sun descended toward the horizon. As it did, the colour in the western sky progressed through deepening shades of yellow, orange and crimson. Between us and the setting sun were shimmering waves, an island, and a mountainous horizon that slowly accepted the red ball of fire that disappeared behind it before our very eyes. It was a magical moment that we will remember for years to come.
