Epidaurus cruises - A magical theater experience
6/28/2010

Enjoy a Saturday night cruise and combain the opportunity to view some of the most important ancient Greek plays (drama or comedy) , played  in the famous ancient theater of Epidaurus.

Saturday, 10th July 2010
Theatre: Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus
Play: ‘Oedipus Rex by Sophocles’
The Spyros A. Evangelatos Amphitheatre is to stage the greatest work of all the Sophoclean tragedies, Oedipus Rex (420 BC), with actors of note. In his search for Laius‘ killer — whom the Delphic  Oracle has declared is polluting Thebes and bringing a catastrophic plague upon the city — King Oedipus uncovers the thread that links his life to the curse of
the House of Laius.
Spyros Evangelatos notes: “It is perhaps the most important theatrical text to have survived from Antiquity. Humankind stands before fate, confronts it and is crushed. But this annihilation is marked by an incomparable dignity. The  benevolence of the divine is called into question, and the unending efforts of humankind to answer timeless metaphysical questions reigns supreme. It is furthermore an exquisitely plotted text filled with agonising twists”

Theatre: Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus
Play: ‘Lysistrata by Aristofanis’
Lysistrata, a woman of Athens, undertakes to disband the army by enlisting the help of
all Greek women. These women, who have sent their children to the slaughter, who
have been separated from their partners, take an oath of abstinence from their carnal
duties, thus forcing the men to end the war.
Written with sparkling wit during the darkest hours of the Peloponnesian War, Lysistrata (411 BC) is a timeless ode to peace, love and womankind. The Greek National Theatre presents the boldest of all Aristophanic comedies directed by the iconoclast Yiannis  Kakleas, and starring a string of talented actors.

Theatre: Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus
Show: ‘The Acharnians by Aristofanes’
As the Peloponnesian War rages for the sixth consecutive year and Athens is slowly dying,
Dikaiopolis decides to enlist in the fight for peace Having negotiated a private truce with Sparta, he  persuades the largest Athenian demos (municipality)—the Acharnians: battle-hardened veterans of Marathon—to agree to it, and opens up the market where the starving citizens sell geese, hares and daughters disguised as pigs. Sotiris Hatzakis and the State Theatre of Northern Greece, in a present-day approach to The Acharnians (425 BC), mock hawkish pro-war politics and its consequences while singing the praises of reconciliation.

Theatre: Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus
Show: ‘Orestes by Evripides’
Tormented by the Furies, goddesses of vengeance, Orestes reproaches Apollo for driving him to the sacrilegious murder of his mother, Clytemnestra.  Euripides — the most tragic of the tragedians — demythologises the gods and derides the demagogues in his Orestes (408 BC — written fifty years after Aeschylus‘ Oresteia). An exploration of matricide, he approaches the play as a psychological drama, and places emphasis on the plot and its various twists and turns. Directed by the Artistic Director of the Greek National Theatre Yannis Houvardas, and performed by an fine cast, the production is sure to offer a
contemporary and unconventional take on this classic text.
